Dark of Night

“We’ll have to show you the makeshift pyramid court we set up out back when we were kids,” Zak says, and he, Lee and Kara stand from the dinner table as one.

Carolanne clears her throat. “Isn’t someone going to help me with these dishes?”

“Not it!” Lee gets the words out a second before his brother and grins. “Come on,” he says to Kara, tilting his head toward the side door.

His skin prickles with awareness of her the moment they get outside. The night air is cool, and the porch light by the door offers the only illumination of the wide expanse of grass. “We were high school kids,” Lee says, trying to stay calm. “We thought we’d make the Bucs someday, like every other high school kid on the planet.”

Kara gives a half-laugh. “Yeah, me too.”

They reach the court behind the shed where his father used to keep the lawn mower he never used. Lee picks up a ball off the ground. It’s not deflated; neighborhood kids must be playing here.

“Think you can get around me?” Kara asks, her eyes glinting in the darkness. She doesn’t say the words, but he hears them. I dare you.

Lee stares at her, swallows hard, then bursts into motion, twisting past her toward the goal. For a few minutes they move in perfect synchrony, blocking and scoring, their gasps and grunts the only sounds.

Then Kara jumps for a goal and Lee catches her with an arm around her waist and they fall to the ground, the ball rolling away across the yard. It’s too dark to see her face, her reaction. She reaches up slowly, runs her fingers across his forehead, down his cheek, as if she can read his reaction by touch.

“Kara?” Lee whispers against her fingertips.

“Shh,” she begs, and presses her lips up meet his.

It’s everything he remembers from that night at her apartment: her lips are soft but eager and his body is demanding. As her mouth opens under his Lee kisses her hard, his hips rocking instinctively between her legs as she pulls him closer.

A whimper escapes Kara’s lips as Lee drops lower to suck at the side of her throat, and it’s the best noise he’s ever heard. He’s imagined this, dreamt about it, is desperate to take her.

Somewhere in the distance, a door slams. Kara pushes Lee off of her, leaps to her feet, stands over him, panting in the darkness.

Lee rubs a hand across his mouth as he slowly stands up. “Over here, Zak,” he calls, and his voice sounds wrong, too rough. His brother’s still a minute away and Lee reaches out for a moment, brushing his fingers down Kara’s cheek. He can feel how flushed she is, how rapidly she’s breathing.

“It’s wrong,” she says, but not like she means it.

Lee stares at her, wondering what he’d see in her eyes right now. His hand falls away.

Hours later Kara lies awake in the darkness. The sofa bed is comfortable enough, more comfortable than the mattress in her apartment, even, but her mind won’t turn off.

I’m not risking your mother having another reason to hate me, she told Zak when he offered to sneak out of his room and join her. Now she wishes she’d let him; at least it would be a distraction from thinking about how incredible it felt to kiss Lee, from remembering how instantly she responded to his touch.

Across the room a clock is ticking, counting off the minutes as she stares at the ceiling. At some point Kara can’t stand it and kicks the blankets away, lunging out of bed toward the door.

The grass is cold under her bare feet, the air even cooler than it was earlier. Spring is here, but winter hasn’t quite lost its hold. Kara makes her way through the darkness to the pyramid court. The ball is still on the ground where Zak dropped it when the three of them headed inside. She half-heartedly tosses it toward where the goal should be and grins faintly at the tell-tale rattle of the ball falling perfectly into the basket.

She tilts her head up, looking at the stars. This isn’t somewhere she ever imagined she’d be. “Gods,” she whispers to herself. It was right here that he tackled her.

“Kara.”

She jumps at the sound of his voice, her heart suddenly racing. Kara swallows quickly as she turns toward him, glad he can’t see her. Lee is only a silhouette against the shadows of the night.

“Couldn’t sleep either?” she asks quickly.

“I wanted to...”

“Frak me?” She means to sound accusatory but a slight hitch in her voice betrays her. For a long moment they stand silently. Then he moves all at once, his hands cupping her cheeks, his mouth finding hers unerringly in the dark. Kara leans into the kiss as heat courses through her. They’ve been heading toward this moment since they first shook hands, and it’s as dangerous a game of chicken as she’s ever played. His tongue thrusts into her mouth; her nails dig into his shoulders. She always plays to win.

Lee’s hands drops to her hips, urging her closer, and Kara can feel how much he wants her. She gives as good as she gets, rubbing against him until he groans. His hands are cupping her ass inside her sweats, dragging her against him, and she bites down hard on his lip as she feels his need.

She was surprised at first by the way Zak adored her, saw only her no matter how many other girls were in the room. His brother is something else. Kara doesn’t even have words for the way Lee wants her, just her, all his morals and rules be damned. It’s terrifying. So is the fact that she wants him just as badly.

Kara whimpers as Lee’s hands slide under her t-shirt and reach up to cup her bare breasts, then she strips it off and reaches for his fly. Lee gasps harshly as she wraps her hand around him, and Kara kisses him to silence. For a moment they’re a jumble of limbs and tangled clothes and she wishes she could see him right now: the raw power of his body, the look in his eyes.

Then they’re falling to the ground again, Kara on top this time, and Lee’s hand is between her legs. The sensation is all the more intense for the darkness: all she can hear are the slick sounds of his fingers thrusting and the harsh panting of his breath. For a moment there’s nothing else in the whole world except Lee touching her.

Frak,” Kara begs, and Lee’s hands align their bodies. With one thrust, he’s inside her and they’re both crying out as they move together. It’s so intense, so right, she can’t hold anything back. Pleasure builds rapidly between them, almost more than she can stand, and she cries his name over and over as release approaches.

“I love you,” Lee moans in the darkness and in that instant Kara’s orgasm hits, coursing through her as she clenches around him, as he slams into her a few final times and comes with a groan.

Kara falls away from him then, resting beside him on the grass. Her body is languid, relaxed, but already she feels cold with the knowledge of what they’ve done. “Well that makes things more complicated,” she whispers.

Beside her Lee shifts, raising up on an elbow, looking down into her shadowed face. “It doesn’t have to,” he says, emphatic. “In the morning...we’ll tell him this is what we want. It’ll suck but he’ll forgive us eventually.”

Kara nods in the darkness as Lee wraps an arm around her waist, tucking her close against his body. “Did you mean that?” she asks softly.

He stills. For a moment he doesn’t speak. “Yes.”

She turns her face into his shoulder, inhaling the smell of his sweat, the heat of him wrapping around her. She’s never felt like this before. She doesn’t say anything else.

Lee’s damp with dew when he wakes up, damp and alone. His t-shirt and jeans are draped over him, the only sign that she’s been there. Lee tugs them on slowly, seeing for the first time the scratches and marks Kara left on his skin. He grins at the memory. He made her scream his name.

Tugging his clothes on, Lee heads for the house. He can see his mother cooking breakfast through the window and makes his way to the front door to grab the paper.

“There you are,” Carolanne says as he comes in. “You missed all the excitement.”

Lee’s heart starts to pound, a smile tugging at his lips. “Is Zak--”

“Lee!” Zak calls from the hallway, bursting into the kitchen. “Kara and I are getting married.”

He freezes, the world going silent. Kara steps in behind Zak, her eyes full of too many emotions for him to make sense of. Love is in there somewhere.

“She just woke me up and proposed!”

He sees Kara flinch. “Your idea?” He can’t seem to breathe.

“Yeah.” She slips her hand into Zak’s. His ring is on her thumb. “My idea.”

Lee nods even though the words make no sense. “I hope you’re happy,” he grinds out, and his voice trembles just a bit. He thinks his heart might be breaking as she nods.

Without a word to the others, Lee heads to the bathroom, tries to shower off the smell of her, to scrub away the memory of her tight around him. When he comes out they’ve left, headed back to the Academy. Lee drives to the shuttle that will take him to Atlantia, willing himself to be stone, not to cry, not to scream. It feels like the worlds have ended.
