The Right Call

As the So Say We Alls fade, Kara sets down the bottle and heads out of the rec room. Lee sees her go and slips past his father, around Tigh, and out the hatch behind her.

“Wait up!” he calls as Kara reaches the corner.

She stops and waits for him, her eyes wary. “What now, Apollo?”

He shakes his head. “I’ll walk you.”

Kara peers at him, confused, then starts walking again, heading deeper into the ship and away from their quarters.

“About last night,” Lee starts. “Not that!” he interrupts himself as she looks at him terrified. “When I said that you’re hung up--”

“On dead guys, I remember,” Kara snaps, walking faster.

“I lost someone too,” he says, stopping. It’s easier to say the words to her back. She freezes but doesn’t turn. “What I said about the wife and the...and the rugrat, and the porch-swing...”

Kara slowly faces him. She looks sadder than he’s seen her in years, her eyes downcast. “Sorry,” she whispers.

“She was pregnant,” Lee says, surprising himself and clearly Kara; she stares at him, horrified. “She told me and I didn’t know what to do. I had to leave to make it to Galactica. I was trying to decide - I was thinking about buying her a ring.”

Even before he finishes the sentence, Kara’s launched herself into him, is holding onto him with all her strength. He puts his arms around her gingerly, takes a deep breath of her hair. After a long moment, he eases into the hug, holding her tighter.

“Come on,” Kara finally says, and pulls away as he releases her. She leads the way, but he figures out quickly where they’re going. The Memorial Hall is empty this time of night, and Kara wanders along it until she finds an empty patch of wall. She turns to Lee and pulls out a wrinkled trading card from her pocket. “Best I’ve got,” she offers quietly. Clenching her jaw, she pins it in place.

Lee stares at it for a long moment, even as he feels her watching him, then finally reaches into his pocket and takes out a slip of paper he’s never shown anyone, not Kara, not his father. He loosens the tack in Anders’ card, then pushes it back in, now holding the ultrasound image in place as well. They look on in silence for a long time.

“Are you okay?” Kara finally whispers, echoing his earlier words.

Lee turns to see her. “Are you?”

Slowly she shakes her head. “I...I had to choose out there, Lee. Take him out myself or live to fight another day.”

“Well you made the right call.”

She stares at the picture of Anders. “I don’t want to die,” she says very softly.

He feels for a moment like he can’t breathe. “Then don’t,” he begs. “Don’t. We’ll make it to Earth and have our bright, shiny future. I’ll build you a porch-swing myself if you want.”

Kara looks at him, smiling, her eyes shining with tears. “Okay,” she whispers.

He kisses her then, because he can’t do anything else. He kisses her and this time she presses back into his arms, her lips opening under his as he pulls her tightly against him. She tastes like liquor and heat, just like yesterday, but everything is different now. They’re going to live. Lee laughs against her lips and feels her answering grin.

They stagger down the hall, kissing and stumbling and trying not to knock any pictures down. The bunkroom is empty, thank the Gods, and Lee dogs the hatch and then stops. “No takebacks, Kara,” he reminds her.

She shakes her head, then strips her tanks off, reaches for his fly.

It’s all different tonight: the urgency is there, but she’s looking at him, arching into him instead of pulling away, slowing down long enough for them to make it into his bunk. The feeling of Kara around him as they finally, finally come together is so perfect he’s glad this didn’t happen last night. She pants his name in his ear - his name - and digs her nails into his back as she starts to come apart beneath him. Lee groans hers in turn as he loses himself in her.

“Do you think we’ll really make it?” Kara asks a while later, laying in his arms, sweaty and sated. She tilts her head, looking at him obliquely.

Lee nods, trying to memorize what she looks like like this. There’s fear in her eyes, and grief, and joy. She’s so beautiful. “Yeah,” he says, grinning. “Now we have to.”
